Country Summary:

Behind Haiti, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, Honduras ranks among the poorest countries in Latin America and the Caribbean with an estimated 60% of its population living in poverty. Poverty is more pronounced in rural areas, although continued rural-urban migration is creating urban poverty belts. The country has an unequal distribution of income, as well as high under-employment.

Poverty, social and economic inequalities and high levels of insecurity in the country present significant challenges to improving the health status of Hondurans, particularly the most vulnerable: women, newborns, elderly people, and children under five.

Goals/Objectives:

  • Learn from MTI partner Project Global Village staff and community members about their community health program and how they partner with the local ministry of health.
  • Learn from PAG staff about the impact it has had over the 29 years of project implementation in Honduras.
  • Provide training to Project Global Village staff members and rural community members in the use of simple and inexpensive methods to pasteurize water as well as education on water, sanitation and hygiene.
  • Learn about the language and culture in Honduras.

Greatest benefit this specific team will bring:

Martin Mcginn and Thomas Carter will teach Project Global Village staff members and local community members simple and inexpensive methods to pasteurize water.

Challenges you expect they may encounter:

There will be mental, physical and spiritual challenges during the course of the trip.  The volunteers, with the help of the Project Global Village staff in Honduras, will help each other overcome any obstacles they may encounter.

Partners:

Proyecto Aldea Global (Project Global Village).

Team member:
